Would you be here, if you hadn't been there?
A big part of my philosophy (and what I cover in depth in my content planners) is experimenting with different content types and styles + having fun with what you create.
So, I’m taking a page out of Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic, and seeing where curiosity takes me…
The idea for this Visual Poetry video project came from a few things.
It started with inspiration from the visual poetry series created by Lavendaire.
Then, an awesome conversation in a Modern Planner mastermind sparked a few ideas around the idea that your experience + background are never a waste of time.
And finally, as I travelled back to my old university to work on a client project, it reminded me of a bunch of footage that I’d filmed around campus MONTHS back (that I hadn’t yet used).
But back to the idea that your background + life experiences are never a waste for just a sec...
I’ve had several people come up to me over the years and question (with disbelief) why I wasted money + time + energy doing a Bachelor of Science when I don’t even “use” my degree right now. And that I’ve thrown away the 8 years I spent on campus (4 doing my degree + 4 working there) and what was the point.
Honestly? I think they’re missing the point.
Doing that Bachelor of Science introduced me to the science communication industry…
Which led to a great job that I loved straight out of uni.
Which dumped me in the deep end of content marketing.
Which led me to take Marie Forleo’s B-School for professional development.
Which sparked the idea that I could work for myself.
Which led me to create the business I’m building today.
Not to mention… who’s to say what direction the future holds?
Nothing is ever wasted.
So when you’re watching this video (or others in this Visual Poetry series), I want you to pause and ask yourself…
“Would you be *here*, if you hadn’t been *there*?”

Whenever you feel like you’re wasting time...
Whether it’s a degree you no longer use.
A job that turned into a dead end.
The course that you spent hours + hours creating... and only 3 people signed up for.
And that webinar you poured heart + soul into... only to have 1 person show up live.
Your experience + creative projects are NOT a waste of time.
Hindsight will show you that your background and past experience is never a waste. And that the journey of self-discovery + experience is what matters. Because THAT is what will get you from *here* to *there*.
So never stop learning + growing + doing.
Content (and business) (heck, life) is an evolution. It’s a journey.
Remember: Would you be here, if you hadn’t been there?
Because the same is true for what you want your future to hold.
You won’t get THERE... if you haven’t been HERE.
